Jones-Harrison West Building
Minneapolis, MNThe Jones-Harrison West building was expanded to create larger Assisted Living units to better meet the needs of the residents. All units were made handicap accessible. Bay windows were added to enhance the surrounding views. Common lounges were also added on each floor to accommodate a variety of activities.

Jones-Harrison Residence
Minneapolis, MNThe scope of this project was large: remodel virtually every room in the five-story nursing and assisted living facility to meet contemporary expectations for senior housing and health care. The challenges were significant as well. While the facility was occupied, all finishes would be updated and existing square footage would be significantly reconfigured. Two complex design challenges were embedded in this project: 1st- reconfigure an entire floor to accommodate the unique needs of residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia; 2nd- create a Wellness Center, complete with a pool, in the existing basement of the facility. This building has an H-shaped configuration-not ideal for a dedicated dementia floor because of dead-ended corridors. Our design solution was to divide the floor into five “neighborhoods,” one in each of the four wings and one in the center area. Each neighborhood would be centered around a “Great Room” with a living room, dining room and kitchen for residents. The basement, being the only floor level with enough available area, was established as the location for the wellness center.

Sister James Care Center
Yankton, SDOn an unspoiled 30-acre site overlooking the Missouri River Valley, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital and the Benedictine Sisters, who sponsor the hospital, calculated an estimated $15 million continuing care campus. This facility consists of a 40-acre site for a replacement 113-bed skilled nursing facility and a new independent and assisted living facility. The campus includes a skilled nursing facility, independent apartments, assisted living, dementia care, adult day services, and a chapel as the community’s centerpiece. Enhanced privacy and an intimate, home-like environment were among key concerns. GLTArchitects developed a neighborhood concept with “wings” of 18 residents. Each wing has a fireplace lounge area overlooking the beautiful Missouri River Valley.

Shepherd of Grace
Becker, MNShepherd of Grace in Becker, MN, is the result of a mutual need for senior housing in Becker, as identified by the Good Shepherd Community of Sauk Rapids, combined with the need for classroom space and a paved parking lot for Grace Lutheran Church in Becker. Working together, they have formed a bond that provides a spiritual and physical tie to the church for the senior housing residents and a new source of church members and volunteers for the church. Both Good Shepherd and Grace Lutheran are members of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. This new 76,000 s.f. facility contains three different living options: 33 units of senior apartments, 18 units of assisted living, and an 18-bed memory care facility consisting of two nine-bed attached cottages. Amenities incorporated within the building include two fireplace lounges, a gift shop, pantry/cafe, library, activity room, family room, beauty/barber shop, whirlpool tub room, large preparatory kitchen and a main dining room with adjacent family dining area. The building is staffed 24/7 and is access-controlled with multiple security systems. A 6,700 s.f. community space connects the facility to the existing church. It contains multiple meeting rooms that can be utilized by both the housing complex and the church. The exterior materials and building layout are designed to be compatible with, and complementary to, the surrounding residential neighborhood.

Villa Health Care Center
Mora, MNGLTArchitects was hired to design an addition on the west side of the existing facility to serve residents who suffer from dementia. This one-story addition includes 14 private rooms which allowed 14 small semi-private rooms in the existing building to be converted to private rooms. The $2 Million addition also contains dining and living room space to create a smaller, more home-like setting for the residents. The residential character of the new addition was designed to be compatible with, yet minimize, the institutional image of the older existing nursing home.
This project was done through the Moratorium Exceptions process of the MN Department of Health.
