Mary Commons

College of Saint Benedict
St. Joseph, MN

Mary Commons is a multi-use building located in the middle of three residence halls. It serves as a gathering space for students with a large 2-level lounge and a mailbox and information booth. The campus bookstore was moved to Mary Commons.  Campus security had limited space prior to the remodel and now has additional office space and equipment storage and locker/shower facilities. A second floor was added to the building that provides student development offices.  Care was taken so the different departments could share staff and office equipment but maintain privacy for the students needing assistance.

Child Care & Child Development Center

St. Cloud Technical & Community College
St. Cloud, MN
St. Cloud Technical and Community College purchased the previous home of the Boy Scouts (2,400 s.f.) and added approximately 5,300 s.f. to create a living/learning environment for students, as well as children. The center common space (lit by clerestory glass) serves as an area for observation and learning by SCTCC students enrolled in the Children & Adult Care Education Program. Numerous exterior windows and interior windows flood dramatic levels of natural light throughout the building. Areas for infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers and Headstart comprise most of the building.

A & B Wing Remodel and Addition

St. Cloud Technical College
St. Cloud, MN

This project consisted of approximately 50,000 sq. ft. that was remodeled into re-organized classrooms, labs and office space. A 9,500 sq. ft. maintenance/storage addition was added, as was a 3,000 sq. ft. classroom addition. Flexible technology is very important to SCTC. All classrooms are “smart” - constructed to accommodate 100% laptop computer use by students. A system of raceways and accessible plenums was utilized to provide the utmost in flexibility.

Garvey Commons Remodel

St. Cloud State University
St. Cloud, MN

The Garvey Commons serving area was fully remodeled to better meet the needs of today’s students. A soup bar, new grilled options, and more “cook to order” options are now offered to students.  To upgrade to a more “collegiate” feel, the furniture was replaced, and most of the flooring was changed to offer new colors and patterns for a more comfortable feel.  Menu boards were updated, lighting was softened, and serving line finishes were improved.  The overall effect was to provide a more pleasant and comfortable serving and dining experience.

Oaks Apartments

Loras College
Dubuque, Iowa

A new project at Loras College is the Oaks Apartments, a 37,000 s.f. residential facility for 125 students.  These new suites will be located near an existing apartment housing facility and will help that facility link to the center of campus.  The project is carefully sited to increase the density of the campus, while not removing any of the natural beauty and a stand of ancient oaks.  When completed, the facility will offer the students a great housing option with good campus access and beautiful natural views. The facility is being designed with a geothermal heating system to reduce the energy costs by almost 50%.  The exterior materials and much of the interior materials are being selected for their beauty, durability, their natural appearance, and their low impact on the environment.

President's Office and Training Center

St. Cloud Technical & Community College
St. Cloud, MN

St. Cloud Technical & Community College purchased a neighboring office building to house their continuing education and customized training programs.  Six “smart” classrooms were created, along with private and open office spaces to accommodate these programs.  Four of the classrooms were equipped with an operable partition to allow them to be opened up to two larger classrooms.  A larger storage room and more exterior parking allowed the Customized Training program students to be able to come and go with much greater ease and efficiency.

In 2012, the College hired GLTArchitects to convert the reception and office space into a suite for the president.  The new space includes a reception area, private offices, open workstations, and a conference room.

Coffee Shop (Caribou Coffee)

Atwood Memorial Center
St. Cloud State University
St. Cloud, MN

An existing under utilized lounge space was remodeled to incorporate a new coffee shop and entry vestibule.  The venue offers an expanded menu and provides a meeting area for students.  The design features a “north woods” feel and incorporates a fireplace and a variety of seating options.  It opened in February, 2010.

Ardolf Science Center

College of Saint Benedict
St. Joseph, MN
Located in the middle of the campus, the two-story, 43,000 S.F. new science center blends with the existing campus architecture, while also expressing the facility’s technological orientation. The building is composed of three major functional elements: faculty offices housed in the north section; classrooms for the school’s chemistry, physics, nutrition, and biology departments in the central section; and general use classrooms and service functions in the south section, which is arranged along a pedestrian-traffic spine for maximum accessibility. While its red brick façade and gabled roof blend with and unify the existing campus architecture, the building’s sky lighted circulation spines and roof-top exhaust stacks reflect its scientific nature.

Loras Cafe

Loras College
Dubuque, Iowa
GLTArchitects was hired to remodel the main student cafeteria, which is located in the college’s student union, the Alumni Campus Center (ACC). The serving area was opened up to the seating area. The outdated cafeteria serving lines were eliminated and replaced with a scattered serving arrangement. The layout includes a variety of seating options, including tables, booths, and bar-like seating. A cyber-cafe counter looking out to the atrium of the campus center lends openness to the space. The entry into the space was redesigned to give the venue a more visible presence. The new finishes feature the school colors of purple and gold.

Skalicky Plaza/Campus Entry

St. Cloud State University
St. Cloud, MN
Working with the University, GLTArchitects designed an entry that serves as a strong statement and which anchors the development of the Long Range Plan. As the prototype, Skalicky Plaza stimulates smaller plazas, setbacks and landscaping at other campus entrances.

McCarthy - Lynch Apartments

Loras College Dubuque, Iowa
Using the existing steeply sloping typography as part of the design criteria, we developed a series of 19, 4-bedroom apartments, each consisting of a shared kitchen, living room and bath that stepped down the hill. The 31,000 s.f. complex, located on a site identified in the Master Plan as the location for housing, accommodates 84 students in two separate wings tied to a central circulation tower by a series of outdoor walkways. Parking was also developed to relieve congestion in two areas of campus. The complex uses geothermal loop wells under the parking lot and heat pumps in each apartment for both heating and cooling. The parking lots are carefully designed to control storm water run-off to reduce the stress they would put on the existing city storm water system.
