St. Cloud State University Husky Plaza
St. Cloud, Minnesota
As part of its 150th Anniversary celebration, St. Cloud State University envisioned a signature campus landmark that would honor its rich history, celebrate Husky pride, and create a lasting tradition for current and future students, alumni, families, and friends. GLTArchitects partnered with the university to transform an underutilized space between three campus buildings into a vibrant and memorable gathering place known as Husky Plaza.
Located at a crossroads of heavily traveled campus walkways, the site previously functioned as little more than a collection of intersecting sidewalks. The redesign transformed the area into a welcoming destination that strengthens campus identity and provides a focal point for student life, alumni engagement, and special events.
At the heart of the plaza is a striking bronze Husky sculpture, created by sculptor Chris Bennett. Standing at twice the size of a real husky, the statue serves as a powerful symbol of the university’s spirit, determination, and pride. The sculpture is prominently displayed atop a granite pedestal crafted from locally sourced quarry.
The plaza was designed to encourage gathering, reflection, and celebration. Surrounding the Husky sculpture is a field of commemorative pavers featuring donor names, recognizing the many alumni and supporters who contributed to the project and the university’s continued success. A curved architectural wall displaying the St. Cloud State University name and logos provides both a visual backdrop and a strong expression of institutional identity.
The plaza was designed to encourage gathering, reflection, and celebration.
