ARCHITECTS FOR THE ARTS -- A GRANT PROGRAM OF GLTARCHITECTS
FOR K-12 EDUCATION
The goal of the Architecture for Arts program is to support fine arts education
for young people in Central Minnesota and to encourage business support of
the arts. Since 1998, the program has given 6 - $500 grants each year to area
organizations that provide arts education to K-12 students. To date, the grants
have totaled $30,000.
CENTRAL MINNESOTA COUNCIL -- BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA EXPLORER POST
GLTA oversees a Boy Scouts Explorers Post for high school students, boys and
girls, interested in architecture. The program has been in place for 8 years.
The Post meets once or twice a month during the school year. The students get
to design small projects, build models, visit construction sites and learn
about drafting and other fields related to architecture. The program involves
several volunteers from GLTA each year and gives the students a “hands-on” opportunity
to find out what architects and drafters do, education required, related fields,
salaries, and which classes they should be taking in high school.

TEACHING ARCHITECTURE TO SELECT 6TH GRADERS
The “Nine Fine Artists” program was part of a comprehensive arts
curriculum at Jefferson Elementary in St. Cloud. This arts curriculum was based
on the premise that schools need to be about the business of teaching students
to successfully communicate with the world in which they live. The ultimate
goal of the sixth grade portion of the program was that each sixth grader would
be able to express a theme and thesis of personal importance through an art
form. Artists taught students about their art form (in our case, architecture)
over a 12-week period, meeting every week for 2 hours.
