Grooters Leapaldt Tideman Architects
renovate historic downtown building for new offices

The brick building at 808 Courthouse Square has housed a variety of activities since its construction in the 1930s, including offices, apartments, a machine shop and an abstract company. As of Aug. 13, 1998, it became the corporate headquarters for Grooters Leapaldt Tideman Architects, a 22-year-old St. Cloud architectural firm.

Daniel Tideman and David Leapaldt, firm principals, purchased the facility with an eye toward participating even more fully in the rejuvenation of downtown St. Cloud. "It seemed a natural 'next step' for us to become stakeholders in downtown St. Cloud," said Leapaldt, principal architect for the renovation of the Paramount Theatre, also in downtown St. Cloud.

808 Courthouse Square is a two-story building to the south of the county courthouse, one block off St. Germain Street.

The renovation has focused on exposing the character of the facility. Project Manager John Frischmann said that the wood floors and wood structure of both floors were entirely exposed, creating more than 10-foot-high ceilings. The granite foundation in the basement is also visible. The renovation created 3,000 square feet of working space and fully accommodates the 17-member firm, which relocated from leased office space at 816 W. St. Germain Street, St. Cloud.

"808 Courthouse Square is the center of our community," said Principal Daniel Tideman. "We're pleased to be a part of preserving the city center's vibrancy."
